One must show a high level of competency in adult psychiatry before they are allowed to go for training in this sub-division.

One can only be eligible for taking the certification exam, after they have gone through and successfully finished the whole training. In the US, AOBNP and ABPN are the only bodies that administer the exam to candidates. One is given a license that allows them to seek employment of enter into the private practice when they pass the board examination. They are free to render psychiatric services to the public.
