Why Depression Counseling Is Important

Illnesses spread by microorganisms often follow a predictable course, and in many cases can be successfully treated using medications alone. Depression is a disease, but it not transmitted from person to person, and requires a completely different approach. It includes social, biological, psychological and spiritual factors, and depression counseling has become a significant part of recovery today for millions of people living with the illness.

The common physical symptoms imitate other ailments, and can include weight swings, constant mental and physical fatigue, or digestive complaints. An attack can be triggered by personal situations such as constant stress, a severe personal loss, or even substance abuse, none of which necessarily indicate disease.

Because the symptoms and causes vary from person to person, the most successful treatments rely on a combination of approaches. It provides a spectrum of recovery options, but also stresses that patients must discover which one best fits their own needs. Counseling is often a prelude to actual long-term psychotherapy, a process using a similar approach, but which delves more deeply into personal behavior patterns.

To be most effective, a spectrum of personal issues must be addressed. A counselor helps people understand how their own thought processes are working, and how to change them using a cognitive approach. Interpersonal therapy addresses the relationships people have with others, and how those interactions affect mental health. While counselors and psychologists offer possible solutions, their primary job is to help patients understand their own needs.

They provide a safe and trusting environment to begin that journey. When long-term changes seem too difficult or complicated to complete, a counselor helps patients continue to make real progress. They also help patients cope with the effects of medications.
