A Greater Insight Into Youth Unemployment In South Africa

By Nancy Gardner

It is not easy to find a job of any kind these days, especially for someone who is young and inexperienced. Youth unemployment in South Africa is a fine example of this. You are always competing with those who have the experience, which is what counts at the end of the day. When you leave school you don't have much of a resume to build up on.

This not only applies to universities and colleges, but school is also a problem. Parents are not able to pay for their education because they battle financially themselves. Some of these youths are very rebellious and will form gangs and often leave school before they are ready. Crime is a big problem in South Africa and they will rather turn to this in order to make ends meet.

It is also a problem for parents because children are left at home for a longer period of time. This means that they have to support them and this is not always easy. Parents are working longer than they used to. They are retiring at a later age simply to help their children out who are struggling. In the past parents could help their kids find jobs, but this is not the case anymore.

A lot of the youth have started to head overseas in search of positions which pay well and where they are able to find a job easily. However, not everyone is able to do this. It is only those with wealthy parents that are able to send their kids overseas. A lot of young people in South Africa come from backgrounds where there are no finances available and this poses more of a problem.

The young people who are well off are flocking to other parts of the world, which leaves the country left with more disadvantages youths. There are more opportunities in other parts. There is a greater demand for those who have graduated from universities with top degrees. Often they head off for some experience. They may find that there are internships available.

Gap years are becoming more common these days as well. However, the problem is that there is no set goal in mind. After a year of gallivanting around the country or the world, one may not be sure what to do. Funds have run out, and youths will be at home, feeling lost. Young people tend to stay at home with their parents longer these days as well.

South Africa is known for its crime. Quite often this is because someone has lost hope in the employment situation. They turn to crime because they feel that this is where they are able to make a living. They will join a gang and things start getting worse.

There are a lot of opportunities in South Africa where one can start a business. The country needs a touch of youth to liven it up as well. They know a lot about the trends and technology. However, getting funding can be a problem. Looking at this issue does not have to hold one back, because there are reliable sources which help young people who have good ideas.
