The Main Christian Arguments Against Evolution

By Ina Hunt

When Charles Darwin published his book On the Origin of the Species he immediately caused a debate that continues to this day. Scientists have largely accepted his theories but creationists describe it as blasphemy and worse. They believe that the universe, including the earth and all creatures that populate it were created and that it is not as ancient as Darwin suggests. There are a number of Christian arguments against evolution.

It is only to be expected that religious groups use the Bible as their main source of information and proof against the theory. They maintain that the Bible is the Word of God and that it is accurate in all ways. Therefore, if God states in the Bible that He has created the universe from scratch, then this must be the one and only truth.

Religious groups also argue that the very fact that the universe exists is proof that there is a God. Since the universe is not eternal and since it had a very definite beginning, as even scientists agree, then there must be an eternal external force that actually caused the universe to come into being. They say that the universe could not have come into being by fluke or by accident but only through intelligent design.

Religious groups also cite the Second Law of Thermodynamics to refute the theories first proposed by Darwin. According to this law all things, over time, becomes less ordered. In this way buildings crumble and stars burn out. This is in contrast with what Darwin proposes. His theories state that things become more ordered as time goes on something that is obviously not the case.

Many creationists believe that fossil records show that they are right. They point out that there has never been a half evolved fossil found. They say that it would be impossible for a slow evolving of, for example, a reptile to a bird. The creature would simply not be able to survive. All fossils are whole and they do not show any changes over time.

Opponents of Darwin also point out that human speech is unique and that even extensive efforts failed to teach any other life form to communicate on the same level. They also point out that the human ability to exercise free will is unique and that it has always been like that. These abilities have not evolved but have been part of the human make up from the earliest times.

Religious groups are quick to point out that the theory that different species evolve in competition with each other is utter nonsense. They point out that there are numerous examples of different species that are dependent upon each other. There are also many cases where the symbiosis between two species is vital to the survival of both. This point towards intelligent design rather than haphazard evolving.

Evolutionists continue to experience strong resistance from creationists and Christians. The latter maintain that there is a God that created the universe as it is and that everything was created perfectly at once. Evolutionists argue that things change gradually and that species evolve slowly in order to survive.
