Kentucky is an open state since it has implemented the Freedom of Information Act. An open state means that its local residents can request for any of their personal documents whenever they have a need for it. One of the many files they can request is the Kentucky marriage license records.

Marriage certificates in the state of Kentucky are used in a number of reasons. Updating the family tree would require looking at a number of documents to be able to completely update the family history and one of the important documents used as reference is the marriage record. When doing some transactions with the government that may involve the finances of the couple, a marriage certificate may be one of the documents that need to be provided in order to proceed with any request. The document is also used as reference by people who checks on the marital status of the one's they are going out with.

A public marriage record in Kentucky would contain the personal details of the bride and the groom who got married. Their personal details can be found on the file such as the place and date they were born as well as the address of their residence and the job they had during the time they got married. Details about when and where the marriage occurred are indicated on the file. One would also know the names of the people who are witnesses to the event as well as the names of the couple's parents.

The Vital Records Section of Kentucky does not issue a copy of a marriage license but it can help provide and verify information as to where the license can be obtained. One has to pay a separate fee when the request is made at the county.

The state of Kentucky only releases a copy of the marriage certificate if the marriage occurred since June 1958. One has to indicate their reason for obtaining such document. The state of Kentucky only releases the document if the one who filed it is either the bride or the groom or their immediate family. Requests can be sent by mail but it can take several days before the document can be obtained.
